California Dream Ride Day 2 - Davis Out and Back (71 miles)

OMG OMG OMG

What a wild ride we are having...

The Tubbs Fire is a wildfire burning in Napa and Sonoma counties in Northern California, including parts of the cities of Santa Rosa and Calistoga. It is one of fourteen large firessimultaneously burning in eight Northern California counties in what has been called the "Northern California firestorm".[

All of this started Sunday night before our Monday start of the California Dream Ride. So far 15 lives have been lost, 2000 homes and buildings have been destroyed, over 50,000 acres are on fire, and we have zero containment as of Tuesday night. It is horrific.

Today we were supposed to ride to Calistoga. Clearly out of the question. Our intrepid Dream Ride director and crew rerouted us - only to be thwarted by further road closures. Today we had a new plan, but were further challenged by closed roads due to construction work unrelated to the fires. It seems like one hit after another. Throughout it all, it was inspiring to see everyone rally and keep our spirits up and keep going. And again, it is difficult to feel disappointed or put out when so many have lost so much. We are blessed.

By the end of the day, we headed northeast to avoid the terrible smoke. We ended the day with 71 flat miles. The country roads were for the most part unremarkable. Some were downright boring and monotonous. Nothing compared to the anticipated glory of wine country. But it was an oddly fun day. We shall remember this ride forever.

Was going to post more photos tonight, but it's not loading. Not a fan of this blogger program. Oh well. Will try again later.
